As a concrete response to the signs of the times, “Bente: Tubig at Panalangin para sa mga Magsasaka” was organized by the SEMNET Secretariat last December 4, 2008 for the benefit of displaced farmers coming from Negros Occidental, Calatagan, Batangas and Banasi, Camarines Sur. This project is in collaboration with San Jose Seminary’s Social Awareness and Political Involvement (SAPI) and the Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB).
The project was for the purpose of getting seminarians involved in the plight of the marginalized farmers, who are fighting for their rights under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP). By means of a meager donation of twenty pesos, roughly equivalent to a bottle of mineral water, the campaign’s “tubig-component” provided at least temporary relief to the protesting farmers who were either doing a hunger strike or walking bare-foot to express their claims. Aside from the monetary contribution, the advocacy likewise appeals for prayers and masses to be offered for the intentions of the farmers. |
